About

Location, location, location! Are you looking to work, play, or shop somewhere that you can get to via public transit? Using public transit means you don't have to put up with traffic, parking, or higher gasoline fees. Public transit has numerous other benefits, including reduced dependence on foreign oil and reduced highway infrastructure costs!

For Individuals: We're making it easy for individuals to identify areas that are highly accessible by public transit.

For Businesses: We are working to drive more business--meaning more dollars--to those businesses that are transit accessible. Do you want help promoting a business that is transit accessible, or are you looking to find transit accessible locations?

Our Transit Accessibility Index (TAI) score offers an objective comparison of the accessibility of locations by public transit versus private automobile. (A simple explanation of the TAI: a ratio of the amount of time to get from point A to point B by public transit versus private auto, e.g., a TAI of 1.5 means it takes 1.5 times as long by public transit as by private auto). Ok, let's face it--outside of rush hour, public transit is rarely faster than private auto--but once you figure in costs including parking and peace of mind, public transit is a great way to get to a lot of places!

For starters, we developed TAI scores for a number of locations in Northern Virginia--see the Google map here. You will notice that three areas surrounding Metro stations score very well--TAIs below 1.5. Three areas score poorly--TAIs of 2.0 or higher. The circles surrounding the Metro stations illustrate how far a business may be located from the Metro station and still enjoy a TAI of 1.5 or better. For example, a business could be located as much as 0.9 miles from the Rosslyn Metro station, and still be served very well by public transit.
