Transit Accessibility Index (TAI)

DEFINITION

A measure of the accessibility of a location by public transit compared to the accessibility by private vehicle. In its simplest form, it is a ratio of the amount of time to travel from point A to point B by public transit versus private vehicle. More sophisticated forms take into consideration factors such as public transit reliability.

Map Key and Explanation

Silver Stars indicate locations that are Most Accessible, with TAI scores of less than 1.0. It is faster to travel to these locations by public transit than by private vehicle. These are very rare.

Green Teardrops indicate locations that are Very Accessible, with TAI scores of 1.0 or more but less than 1.5.

Yellow Teardrops indicate locations that are Accessible, with TAI scores of 1.5 or more but less than 2.0.

Red Teardrops indicate locations that are Poorly Accessible, with TAI scores of 2.0 or more but less than 2.5.

Red Triangles indicate locations that are Very Poorly Accessible.
